Arts-Based Therapy

At Sadbhaav Child Development Foundation, we use Arts-Based Therapy (ABT) as a gentle, creative way to support children

who face emotional, behavioural, developmental, or social challenges. Many children find it hard to express themselves through words — but they can often share their thoughts, feelings, and inner world through art, music, movement, or storytelling. Arts-based therapy creates a safe, non-judgmental space where children can explore their emotions, build self-awareness, and strengthen their ability to cope with day-to-day situations.

What Is Arts-Based Therapy?

Arts-Based Therapy is a structured, evidence-based method that uses different art forms — such as:

  • Drawing and painting
  • Music and rhythm-based activities
  • Movement and dance
  • Storytelling, role-play, and drama

It is not about how “good” the child is at art or music. The focus is on the process, not the end product. Through creative expression, children learn to manage emotions, build social skills, and increase their self-confidence.

Who Can Benefit from ABT?

Arts-Based Therapy is suitable for children who:

  • Have difficulty expressing emotions like anger, sadness, or anxiety
  • Show withdrawn, aggressive, or unpredictable behaviour
  • Struggle with attention, focus, or self-control
  • Have gone through trauma, loss, or stressful life changes
  • Find it hard to connect socially or build relationships
  • Are diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Anxiety, Learning Difficulties, or Emotional Disorders
  • Benefit from a more playful and less verbal approach to therapy

Even children without a specific diagnosis can benefit from ABT if they seem emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected, or unable to cope with their environment.

How We Work

At Sadbhaav Child Development Foundation, ABT is conducted by trained therapists who use a mix of art, movement, and play-based activities based on the child’s age, needs, and comfort level. The therapy sessions are:

  • Individual or small-group based
  • Conducted in a calm, welcoming environment
  • Flexible and child-led, allowing space for creativity and choice
  • Guided by clear therapeutic goals (such as improving emotional regulation, social interaction, or confidence)

We never force a child to talk or perform. Expression happens naturally, over time, and in ways that feel safe and comfortable to the child.

Involving Parents

Parents are kept informed of the child’s progress and are often surprised at how much children can express through creative mediums. We support families by:

  • Explaining the goals and benefits of ABT in simple terms
  • Suggesting expressive activities at home
  • Sharing small observations from sessions that may help in daily life

At Sadbhaav Child Development Foundation, we believe that healing and growth can happen not just through words, but also through colours, sounds, stories, and movement. Arts-Based Therapy gives children the space to express themselves in ways that feel natural — helping them become more emotionally balanced, socially connected, and confident in who they are.
